Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common concerns regarding doula services

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to families during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.

HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM A MIDWIFE?

Fantastic question! Midwives are medical professionals who handle clinical care. These would be things like monitoring the baby's heart rate, checking dilation, and delivering your baby. Doulas do not do anything medical. I'm there to provide emotional and physical support, helpful information, and a steady, encouraging presence through every part of your birth.

What support do you provide during labor?

During labor, I provide a grounding voice, continuous physical and emotional support, comfort measures, and advocacy to ensure a positive birthing experience. My presence is soothing, empowering, and nonjudgmental. I will never speak for you or make choices for you, but I will help you find your voice and your strength and connect with your instincts.

Can you assist with breastfeeding?

Yes, I offer breastfeeding support to help mothers learn techniques, establish a feeding routine, check pump flange sizing, and address any challenges, fears, or worries. If you want to breastfeed, I will do everything in my power to help you succeed!

Is a doula still helpful if I have an epidural or c-section?

Absolutely! A doula can be a valuable source of support, reassurance, and assistance, regardless of your birthing plan or the methods you use. No matter how your birth unfolds, I will remain to help you through!

What postpartum services do you offer?

Postpartum care includes emotional support, newborn care, guidance, and help with household or social adjustments after the baby arrives. This could look like helping you tidy up while you take extra time to snuggle your baby, accompanying you to the park with baby and sibling(s) for the first time, or me coming to manage midnight feedings while you get much-needed rest. How you use your postpartum hours is up to you!

Does a doula replace the role of a partner?

Not at all! A doula complements your partner's role, offering additional support and guidance while ensuring everyone feels informed and involved.

Have you received formal training?

Yes! I completed training through a DONA International-approved program. Education is incredibly important to me, and I continue to take opportunities to learn more and new information. There is always room to grow and learn to give your family the best possible support!

When should I start my doula services?

Typically, you'll want to look at hiring a doula around 20 weeks of pregnancy. However, that doesn't mean you have to wait! Finding a doula earlier in your pregnancy allows you to build a rapport with them, as well as time to develop your birth plan, and access resources to prepare you for your birth and postpartum.

What happens if I'm having multiples?

Firstly, congratulations! You already know that everything is going to be different from what you had originally planned. Double the fun, double the diapers (or more!). You need more things, and the cost of that can be overwhelming. In an effort to make things easier with multiples, rather than paying double the price, I add $400 for each baby, up to 3. If you are pregnant with 4 or more, no additional charges will be incurred past the 3rd child.

What if I have a special case?

No matter your situation, I promise to continue to provide understanding and a nonjudgmental attitude. I will stay by your side to support you and will never try to influence you to change a decision you've made. Every story is different, and my job is to make you feel comfortable and safe through this journey.

Do you accept insurance?

Currently, I do not accept insurance. However, many HSA/FSA accounts will reimburse you for doula services, and I offer a 30% discount if you have Medicaid and WIC, or a 20% discount if you have one or the other.

Is payment upfront?

There is a 50% deposit required to secure your due date in my calendar, but this can be split into as many payments as you need. It does not need to be all at once. When you hit the 50% deposit amount, I will contact you about securing your due date. The remaining 50% is due by 36 weeks. However, I never want finances to prevent you from receiving services. If there is any reason you are unable to pay by your deadline, just talk to me and we will figure out a plan that works for you.

How do I set up my free consultation?
